War Dog - Breaking the chains

One man’s fight against inner demons, ISIS and the Australian justice system. As a young man Jamie Williams went to war. Not on a battlefield but with the French Foreign Legion. And against ISIS. Most of all, within himself. But this is not the story of a victim, nor is it his redemption. This is his riveting account of making choices, taking accountability, and doing it in some of the most dangerous places on earth. War Dog is not just a story of war - it's a story of what leads someone to war, and what happens when they come home to find the real fight has only just begun. Jamie Williams is a former Legionnaire of the French Foreign Legion and former foreign fighter of the Kurdish YPG who played a direct role in the liberation of Raqqa, Syria. He is the only documented Australian known to have taken part in the fall of ISIS's de facto capital. His story was featured in the ABC's Four Corners documentary City of Ghosts, and he has since written publicly about his experience, including an opinion piece for The Saturday Paper that marked his entry into writing. Arrested and charged under Australia's anti-terror laws for attempting to join the fight against ISIS, Jamie was ultimately cleared - but not before enduring solitary confinement, media scrutiny, and years under federal surveillance. Raised in Australia under the long shadow of childhood trauma, Jamie's life spiralled through addiction, violence, and incarceration before he clawed his way out through discipline, purpose, and a growing need to stand for something greater than himself. Told with brutal honesty and hard-earned wisdom, War Dog is Jamie's first-person reckoning with trauma, addiction, brotherhood, betrayal, and survival. It charts the full arc of a man forged by fire - through childhood wounds, brutal military training, frontline combat, wrongful prosecution, and the long, quiet battle to become a better father, partner and man. This isn't about medals or headlines. It's about the moments no one sees: dragging a friend's body under gunfire. Sitting in solitary after trying to do the right thing. Holding your child while wondering if you'll be arrested tomorrow. But this is not a victim's story. It's not a redemption arc. It's a challenge. A promise. A fire still burning.
