Beschreibung

How could one of the world's oldest civilisations become a state that today commands global attention, poised between millennia-old culture and digital supremacy? Anyone wishing to understand China needs more than headlines. 'History of China' shows, in a clearly structured way, how dynasties, revolutions and modernisation gave rise to one of the most influential powers of the present day.

The audiobook's appeal lies already in its early historical scope. China appears here not merely as a giant of the present, but as one of the world's oldest great civilisations, whose development of writing, philosophy, science and state order helped shape human history. From around 2000 BC onwards, the country was ruled by significant dynasties whose historical role may be compared with that of European royal houses. It is precisely this long continuity that makes clear why the abdication of the last emperor in 1912 was not simply a political turning point, but the end of an entire epoch.

The audiobook is equally compelling in tracing the crises that transformed China in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. After the 'Opium Wars', Britain secured control of Hong Kong in 1842; European powers exploited China's weakness and left behind a collective trauma. During this period, Sun Yat-sen emerged as a republican revolutionary leader, founded the 'Kuomintang', and called for reforms. After his death, Chiang Kai-shek assumed leadership, but the struggle for power with the Chinese Communists plunged the country into a long civil war.

This conflict reached its dramatic climax with Mao Zedong. Under his leadership, the Communists completed the famous Long March of 1935 and 1936. Chiang Kai-shek and the 'Kuomintang' were ultimately driven to Taiwan. With the founding of the People's Republic of China on 1 October 1949, a new epoch began. The 'Great Leap Forward', launched in 1958, brought catastrophic famine, while the 'Cultural Revolution', beginning in 1966, unleashed violence, fanaticism and political persecution.

All the more striking, then, is the transformation that followed. After Mao's death in 1976, Deng Xiaoping opened the country to foreign investors and introduced a growth-oriented economic policy. What had been an isolated system became an economic superpower and a key trading partner for the world. Today, China is the world's second-largest economy after the United States and plays a decisive role in debates on technology, the environment, human rights, censorship and data protection. Since 2013, Xi Jinping has stood at the head of the country as General Secretary of the 'Communist Party of China' and President of the State, while the government confronts critics, minorities and sections of the population with harsh control and electronic surveillance.

Bert Alexander Petzold condenses this development into a well-founded and highly readable overall account. The book combines historical overview, political analysis and vivid narrative power in an introduction that goes far beyond superficial buzzwords. Anyone wishing to understand why China is at once the heir to ancient dynasties, a modern industrial nation, a digital superpower and a global force will find reliable knowledge here. The book is ideally suited for preparing for examinations leading to university entrance qualifications and for study at university.

Anyone wishing to grasp China's path from the early dynasties through colonial pressure, civil war, Maoism and economic expansion will find in 'History of China' a work of non-fiction that combines contemporary relevance with historical depth. Secure your copy now and discover a book that sharpens the reader's view of one of the most defining nations of our time.
