Owls After Dark

You hear it from the bedroom window, a low hoot or a shivering screech, and you have no idea who is out there or what it is doing. Somewhere on your street an owl is hunting, and you have never once seen it.

This audiobook follows the owl through its whole life, from the first call on a suburban rooftop through nesting, silent flight, hunting by sound alone, winter survival and the handing on of territory. Each chapter opens inside a real night scene with a barn owl, great horned owl, tawny owl, screech owl or snowy owl, then explains one behaviour that seems impossible, such as ears set at different heights that pinpoint a mouse under snow. Every chapter ends with a plain summary of what the research actually shows and a short listening exercise you can do outside tonight.

By the last chapter you will know which owl is calling before you reach the window. Press play, then step outside and listen.
